Music Heritage UK saddened at closure of the Libertine in Ayr

16 June 2011

Music Heritage UK, the country’s only charity which exists to protect promote and preserve the nation’s musical heritage, is saddened by the news that the owners of Ayr’s only musical hub, the Libertine, have decided to close the venue.

Chief Executive and Founder, James Ketchell said, "Venues like the Libertine are more than bricks and mortar.  One only needs to look at the local reaction to this news to realise just how important a place it is for local musicians and fans.

"Unfortunately this is a pattern which is being repeated across the UK.  More and more small music venues are closing to be transformed into souless chain pubs, redeveloped into flats or are just simply unable to continue in these harsh economic times.  Music fans across Scotland and the UK will be sympathising with the patrons and performers of the Libertine and hope that the owners Scottish & Newcastle will reconsider their decision."
