Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Remember #GivingTuesday!
28 November 2014
Christmas shoppers are being urged to give something back on #GivingTuesday after the retail hype of 'Black Friday' and 'Cyber Monday'.
A host of celebrities have thrown their support behind the 'global day of giving' which is snowballing in the UK with more than 600 charities, businesses and organisations signed up.
Helen Mirren, Michael Palin, Downton actress Joanne Froggatt and supermodel Lily Cole are all backing the campaign on 2nd December.
#GivingTuesday simply asks people to mark the day by doing one thing for a good cause after the shopping days of 'Black Friday 'and 'Cyber Monday'.
That could range from volunteering, giving money or publicising and talking about your support for a cause close to your heart on social media.
Partners in the UK include businesses such as Argos, Homebase, BT and RBS. Charities include Cancer Research UK, the RSPCA, Guide Dogs for the Blind, NSPCC, Breast Cancer Care, Diabetes UK, RNLI, The Children’s Society and Parkinson’s UK.
The campaign is being run in the UK for the first time this year by the Charities Aid Foundation with support from software provider Blackbaud.
Music Heritage UK is a proud founding partner of the day and is hosting an official unofficial after-party featuring Ringo: Music Bingo, the comedy music introduction game. Tickets are on sale now: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/297872
James Ketchell, Chief Executive and Founder of Music Heritage UK said, “We’re delighted to be involved in this first #GivingTuesday in the UK and look forward to celebrating it’s success at our after-party. It’s a great initiative which we’re more than happy to support”.
Hannah Terrey, Head of Policy and Campaigns at the Charities Aid Foundation, said: “#GivingTuesday is a day for giving something back at the start of the festive shopping season.
‘’We know that the UK is one of the most charitable nations on earth, and we really hope people will join us to celebrate and support the work charities, both small and large, do.
“Just as we have imported American shopping traditions like Black Friday and Cyber Monday to get good bargains and pre-Christmas deals, so we can use #GivingTuesday to give a little back.
